Kaya Case Study
summary
While attending BCIT’s UI/UX certificate program, one of my assignments in UI/UX Strategy 1 was to write a UX design case study on a website or app.
For the assignment I chose the rock climbing app Kaya, as I’ve had personal issues using the app, and believe the software could benefit from a UX analysis.
experience
Creating a case study for Kaya gave me some hands on UI/UX design experience, specifically from going through the entire UX pipeline myself.
Initially I began by identifying Kaya’s target user demographics, as well as creating personas to better empathize with those users. As someone who is an active rock climber and has worked at multiple climbing gyms before I had some great experience prior to writing the case study on the user groups, and what demographics should be focused on.
Following user groups, I identified core capabilities the app aimed to provide as well as researched competition. This information was helpful to better inform my decisions later in the case study to come up with actionable solutions to problems the app currently faces.
Next I identified pain points and opportunities, which would normally be gathered by user testing and data research, but do to time constraints I had to settle on my own personal testing and experience with the app. I created a journey map to attempt to better understand the user journey also, which helped identify pain points and opportunities.
Finally, I created a mock-up for a portion of the app, and a design explanation behind the changes. I used Figma to create the mock-ups, and gathered feedback on them from my classmates to improve them.
Impact
Creating this case study gave me some great exposure to the UX pipeline, starting from nothing and ending with a detailed document proposing solutions to design problems.
I feel like this experience improved my UX design skills greatly, and while I still think the case study needs some work, I am proud of what I made with the timeframe I was given.
